Small businesses do not always lose money because sales are weak. In many cases, the real problem is poor financial visibility, missed tax deductions, inaccurate records, payroll errors or decisions made without a reliable cash-flow forecast.
Finzdox Accounting’s financial consulting service helps Sri Lankan SMEs understand where their money is going, identify avoidable costs and build stronger financial systems. The focus is not simply on reducing taxes. It is about improving the way the business records, plans, controls and uses its finances.
Key Money-Saving Benefits of Finzdox Financial Consulting
1. Reviewing Allowable Business Deductions
Businesses may reduce their taxable business income by claiming expenses that are properly incurred in producing that income and permitted under the Inland Revenue Act.
Depending on the business and the supporting documentation available, these may include:
- rent relating to business premises;
- employee salaries and qualifying employment costs;
- utilities used for business operations;
- professional and advisory fees;
- repairs and operating expenses;
- qualifying staff training and development costs; and
- capital allowances on eligible depreciable assets used in the business.
Equipment and machinery should not simply be claimed using the accounting depreciation shown in the financial statements. Tax deductions for these assets are generally calculated through the capital-allowance rules under the Inland Revenue Act.
An expense is not deductible merely because the business has a receipt. It must have a genuine business purpose, be properly documented and satisfy the relevant tax rules. Personal expenditure, entertainment costs, income tax, penalties and certain other expenses are not deductible.
Finzdox reviews expense classifications, supporting documents and capital-allowance schedules to help businesses claim available deductions without taking unsupported tax positions.
2. Improving Bookkeeping and Financial Visibility
Poor bookkeeping can hide overspending, unpaid customer balances, duplicated expenses and cash-flow problems until they become serious.
Finzdox helps businesses improve their financial processes through:
- regular bank and ledger reconciliations;
- accurate recording of sales, purchases and expenses;
- organised invoice and receipt management;
- debtor and creditor monitoring;
- improved chart-of-accounts structures;
- monthly management reports; and
- accounting-platform implementation and automation.
Finzdox supports platforms including Xero, QuickBooks, SAP and Odoo, together with bookkeeping, reporting and financial-advisory services.
The value of better bookkeeping is not limited to administrative time saved. Reliable financial records allow owners to see which products, customers or business activities are profitable and which are consuming cash without producing sufficient returns.
3. Reducing Payroll and Employment-Compliance Risks
Payroll errors can create incorrect employee payments, EPF and ETF surcharges, APIT underpayments and avoidable disputes.
Finzdox helps businesses review:
- gross-to-net salary calculations;
- employee and employer EPF contributions;
- employer ETF contributions;
- APIT calculations;
- allowances and taxable benefits;
- payslip preparation;
- statutory payment schedules; and
- annual employee tax certificates.
The standard EPF contribution is 8% from the employee and 12% from the employer. ETF is generally paid by the employer at 3% of the employee’s applicable earnings.
For qualifying employees under the primary-employment APIT table, the annual personal relief is Rs. 1,800,000, equivalent to Rs. 150,000 per month. The progressive rates range from 6% to 36%. However, separate tables and rules apply to secondary employment, lump-sum payments and certain non-resident employees. The Rs. 150,000 figure should therefore not be treated as a universal payroll threshold.
Correct payroll administration helps reduce the risk of retrospective corrections, employee complaints and statutory liabilities.
4. Strengthening Cash-Flow Planning
A profitable business can still struggle when customer collections arrive after salaries, supplier payments, taxes and loan instalments are due.
Finzdox develops financial plans that may include:
- monthly cash-flow forecasts;
- expected tax-payment schedules;
- debtor-collection planning;
- supplier-payment prioritisation;
- working-capital reviews;
- budget-versus-actual reporting;
- borrowing and repayment planning; and
- financial projections for expansion or new investments.
This gives the business a clearer view of upcoming cash shortages and allows management to act before the problem becomes urgent.
The objective is not to provide unrealistic savings guarantees. It is to help the business avoid preventable interest, late-payment charges, unnecessary borrowing and poorly timed spending.
5. Reviewing Tax Registrations and Tax Treatment
Registering too late can create penalties and unpaid-tax exposure. Registering unnecessarily can also increase administration and compliance costs.
Finzdox reviews whether a business may need registration or ongoing compliance for:
- corporate or individual income tax;
- VAT;
- SSCL;
- APIT;
- WHT or AIT; and
- other taxes applicable to its activities.
VAT registration is generally required where taxable supplies exceed Rs. 15 million in a quarter or Rs. 60 million during a 12-month period. The standard VAT rate is 18%.
AIT on interest or discounts is generally deducted at 10%, subject to the applicable rules and any valid relief or declaration available to the recipient.
Finzdox assesses the business’s actual supplies, income sources, turnover and transaction structure before recommending registration or tax treatment.
6. Planning for Export and Foreign-Source Income
Certain qualifying service-export and foreign-source income may be taxed at a maximum rate of 15%.
However, receiving payment in USD, GBP, EUR or another foreign currency does not automatically qualify the income for the concessionary rate.
For qualifying service-export income, the service must generally be provided for use outside Sri Lanka, the payment must be received in foreign currency and the funds must be remitted through a bank to Sri Lanka.
Finzdox can review contracts, invoices, the location where services are used and the bank-remittance evidence before the business applies the 15% rate.

This provides a more reliable way to measure progress than claiming a fixed amount of savings for every business.
Why Professional Financial Guidance Matters
Sri Lankan SMEs operate within a changing tax and regulatory environment. Recent changes include revised individual tax rates, increased AIT on interest, conditional concessionary treatment for qualifying foreign income and further amendments introduced during 2026.
Businesses must also manage EPF, ETF, APIT, VAT and other obligations while maintaining sufficient cash for salaries, suppliers and business growth.
Professional financial consulting helps connect these responsibilities. Instead of treating bookkeeping, tax, payroll and business planning as separate tasks, Finzdox reviews how each area affects the overall financial position of the business.
